Hwa Chong Institution was one of the pioneer schools in Singapore to introduce the Bicultural Studies Programme (“BSP”) in 2005. This programme aims to develop a core group of students who are at ease with both Western and Eastern cultures, thereby maintaining Singapore’s position as a bridge between the East and the West. Students enrolled in BSP gain a profound understanding of topics pertaining to China and participate in immersion programmes that enhance their appreciation of both Eastern and Western cultures, thereby equipping them with essential cross-cultural communication skills.
It is compulsory for BSP scholars admitted at the secondary 3 entry point to study China Studies in Chinese (“CSC”) at the H2 level in junior college. On the other hand, non-BSP scholars can choose to enroll in the H2 CSC course in junior college. Students studying H2 CSC will explore topics related to contemporary China’s economy, politics, society and international relations.
This comprehensive curriculum aims to deepen their understanding of China’s development across these core dimensions. For the H2 CSC examinations, students are required to complete 2 written papers – Paper 1 (Case Studies) and Paper 2 (Essays). Paper 1 (Case Studies) comprises 2 sections, carrying 35 and 25 marks, respectively. Paper 2 (Essays) consists of 1 mandatory question and 2 optional questions, with a total score of 90 marks. In addition, students will participate in activities such as the BSP Symposium organised by the Ministry of Education, and the Business China Youth Forum (“BCYF”) hosted by Business China, to broaden their academic horizons. Through collaborative and exploratory learning, students augment their critical and adaptive thinking skills while developing creative solutions to tackle complex problems.
