If you're enthusiastic about making meaningful contributions to both your school and the wider community in a self-driven, enriching, and fulfilling manner, then Hwa Chong’s Values-In-Action Council (VIAC) is an ideal match for you!
About us
VIAC comprises of a group of 12 individuals deeply passionate about serving the community. We aim to raise students' conviction in volunteerism and instil in them a lifelong interest and involvement in community service. Headed by the ExCo, VIAC consists of four in-charge (IC) roles including Service Learning (SL) Admin, Publicity, Batch CIP and Website.
We are responsible for guiding the overall direction and vision of the Council, ensuring that its initiatives and activities align with our goals and values. In addition to our role-specific responsibilities, we also serve as attachés to IC roles, oversee the planning and execution of Batch Projects, and support various events, contributing to the smooth operation and success of the Council’s programs.
We are committed to making the SL journey more enriching by conducting engaging workshops to guide students through the SL process, while overseeing the vetting of the proposals.
We oversee all publication efforts for VIAC, ensuring that information is communicated in a clear, engaging, and effective manner across various platforms.
We design and coordinate meaningful activities for the beneficiaries with whom our batch volunteers, tailoring them to meet the specific needs and interests of each group.
We bring all SL resources within reach through our website, where comprehensive guides ensure that your queries regarding VIA and the SL process are fully addressed.
Just like a dove carries hope and peace wherever it flies, VIAC spreads the spirit of giving across Hwa Chong, turning values into action and action into impact. Over the years, VIAC leads various impactful school wide initiatives called Batch Projects to inspire and involve the wider student body in community service. Our gallery below features Batch Projects spanned across various beneficiaries.
Launched in 2023, Kits for Kids is a VIAC Batch Project that seeks to brighten the lives of terminally ill children. Hwa Chong students contribute by creating activity booklets featuring fun exercises such as crosswords and colouring, which are then distributed to the children along with sets of colour pencils.
We received nearly 100 letters of appreciation for the migrant workers, each of which was tied to a 100 Plus and presented to them as a token of gratitude. Moreover, each worker also also received a small care pack containing an energy drink, a towel, and a packet of tissues.
During the Chinese New Year festive season, we sought to rally the Hwa Chong community in extending care and support to those in need through a school-wide food donation drive. We successfully collected over 150 food packs containing essential items, which were distributed to underprivileged families in our community.
Through heartwarming activities such as our Mother's Day flower-making workshop and the digital photowall initiative, we strive to create meaningful experiences that encourage students to pause, reflect, and appreciate the small joys and moments in everyday life. Beyond Hwa Chong, we also spread the culture of gratitude to children and youths who need support by creating fun and interactive activties for them.
The mission of Love Through Our Lens is to raise awareness and cultivate empathy within our student community for the daily challenges faced by individuals with visual disabilities. Through immersive activities, meaningful discussions, and our signature initiative, Dining in the Dark, we aim to educate students, challenge misconceptions, and promote a deeper understanding of their experiences.
Organised once a month, SL Workshops are means which we mentor HCI students in the process of ideating and applying for their passion projects.
By familiarizing ourselves with the Hokkien Dialect, we can better connect and interact beyond language boundary. The school tour programme liased with Singapore Hokkien Huay Kuan truly helps put our learning and passion for service into practice.
Beyond just brainstorming and executing in the corners of the classroom or simply serving Council events, VIAC is a warm close-knit family that fosters bonding through external sessions like our own Amazing Race.
Furthermore, soaring beyond official work sessions, we actively engage with the community weekly by volunteering as a batch with Care Corner Senior Activity Centre in Toa Payoh, fostering connections and making a positive impact on our community. Some befriending activities we have organised include karaoke, charade, terrarium workshop and work out sessions.
And now, it’s your turn to take flight. Juniors, we warmly welcome you to spread your wings with us, and together, we’ll strive, serve, and soar towards a community of love and kindness. 🩵💛🕊️
