Set up in 1986 when a group of students came together to observe Halley’s Comet passing by, the Hwa Chong Astronomy Club (HCAstro) is one of the oldest CCAs in the school and will be celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

Bore-sighting our telescope
HCAstro is a close-knit family of 27 stargazers who share the same wonder for the skies above, right here in Hwa Chong. We welcome anyone who dreams of exploring the universe, no matter where you’re starting from. Beyond learning about astronomy, you’ll find a space to slow down, look up, and see the world with fresh eyes. Most of all, you’ll create lifelong memories with friends who are just as passionate as you are.
Every Friday, we learn about various aspects of theoretical astronomy, which includes astrophysics and general astronomy. Some topics include cosmology, stellar evolution, and celestial mechanics.
Every odd Tuesday, we come together to learn about practical astronomy, which comprises a wide range of topics such as telescope mechanics, constellations, and deep sky objects (DSOs) in the sky.
Every even Tuesday, we also go down to the AstroTurf to put our knowledge to use, stargaze and bond under the exquisite night sky.

Events:
Apart from participating in astronomy competitions, HCAstro maintains active participation in various astronomy events locally and regionally, spending a night together in Marina Barrage to observe the lunar eclipse last year with Astronomy Clubs from Southeast Asian countries. Furthermore, we place importance on internal and external outreach.
Internally, HCAstro can be spotted at the annual Mid-Autumn Festival booths, and our very own Astro Week, where various engaging astronomy activities are planned to share the fun of the universe with the rest of the school. Distinguished experts from NASA, NUS, NTU and other institutions are also frequently invited by us to conduct talks and workshops for interested students.
Externally, we host inter-school astronomy exchanges, as well as serving the community as a batch. To top it off, we are also active in the various astronomy events hosted by other local schools, such as Astronite 2025, which can be seen above!
